If you’re a pet owner, you know the joy that pet companionship can bring to your life. Do they make us feel happier? I would answer that question with a YES!  They jump for joy when they see us come in the door, ever had a teen do that for you? They provide us with unconditional love.  I always feel calmer when I’m around my dogs. They just have that effect on me. And that goes for cats too, the way they purr is almost sure to lull us into a more peaceful state of mind.

How can you resist this smile?

According to livescience.com, “There is mounting evidence that dogs,
cats and other companion animals such as horses can promote
psychological and physical health benefits in their owners,” said Peggy
McCardle, chief of the child development and behavior branch at the
National Institutes of Health.

I find that to be true.  My dogs insist that I take them on a daily walk.  It’s good exercise for all of us, and by the time we get back, they are ready to settle down and take a nap. They also lift my spirits when I’m feeling down. Please read on:

A study conducted this year by University of Missouri-Columbia
researchers rated the emotional well-being of 200 participants using the
Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), a commonly
used test that measures depression. The research showed that single
adults and women were less likely to suffer from depression if they own a dog.

Meet Cody!
Cody loves his toys!

When you have a pet, it’s like always having someone to hang out with. Dogs love to accompany us on our errands that might otherwise seem mundane. They love to get out and socialize. My dogs are on top of the world when I mention, “car ride” to either one of them. And they make other people smile too. Who doesn’t love to see that furry little face in the rearview mirror smiling away!

Or how about the “happy dance” dogs do when you walk in the door with a bag full of goodies. They spread joy across the entire life spectrum.

I always wonder what we don’t know about pets? Just how smart are they? We only know what we can feel and what we can measure, but is there more? I think so! This is just the “tip of the iceberg!”
