Homework in our house consists of two 6th graders, binders, screeches, lots of sugar and preteen insanity. One of my kids had four tests in one day, yikes! That sounds like boot camp to me! Some nights it’s like the Mars Rover Mission Control center here; rows of computers, calculators doing calculations, the grinding of the pencil sharpener, coupled with wild screams from 2 middle-schoolers who are still doing homework at 8 p.m. There is speaking in Spanish and talk about how mummies were mummified. And let’s not forget the musical instruments. We are the proud owners of a first time trumpet player and a cellist, together!
These kids still don’t have a firm grasp on time, even at 12 years old. The entire world is in a digital format. They think they have all the time in the world to get it all done. I believe that in their minds, time goes by in half-hour increments, like 30 minute cartoons.
Both of my kids live in an exaggerated time warp. When I tell them it’s time to get ready for bed, they could swear that they just stepped off the bus minutes ago!
Mission Control Center, or my kitchen table!
“But Mom, we just got home from school, how could it be bedtime already??”
“Uhm, sweetie, that was about six hours ago.”
“OMG, screammmmmmmm, it’s time to go to bed and then back to school AGAIN!”
Yep, this pretty much goes on every, single night! And then my family wonders why I wish there was room for Mommies In Orbit on the International Space Station!

Glad I am not alone in my feelings of dislike for the after-school crazy. I have been shocked at how much time we spend doing homework with a FIRST grader!!! I see that it gets worse. 🙁 Not shocking, though. Thanks for making me smile with a great post!
Thanks Stephanie for the nice comment. I guess it depends on the school and the teachers, plus I have two in the same grade. Good luck, I remember when they were in 1st grade!

So funny! 4 tests in one day does seem like a lot to me! I don’t think I ever had 4 tests in one day back when I was in middle school. I’ve heard lots of people say kids today have way more homework and busy work than their parents ever did.
My husband teaches jr high and hs band, so I love that you have a trumpet player! That’s actually his main instrument and I played the clarinet 🙂 Hope you make it through the practicing until your kid gets it down hehe.
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I’m in SE Missouri so it’s cool to see a fellow Missourian 🙂
Yea, my daughter really like the trumpet. The leaves are still nice and colorful here in St Louis, but our temps are dropping wildly today!
