Sometimes I try to imagine myself raising these wranglers in the 1950’s. What type of parent would I have been? Strict? Permissive? Drunk as a skunk? According to the quote below, I would have been “obligated to the status of housewife.” OMG, I know right, what the heck? If I had been a wife and mother then, it would have sounded more like, “Sir, you can take obligated and well, you know what to do with it!!”
“However, life in the early 1950’s was still very strict. Women were still obligated to the status of housewife and men were the main breadwinners in the family. Children, including teenagers, were to be seen and not heard but by the mid-1950’s, that was becoming more difficult because of newfound freedoms, rock and roll music, and other outlets teenagers had available to them.” www.loti.com
Although I do like the part about the teenagers and children being seen and not heard, that means you wranglers!! If that’s the case, then hell yes, I would have loved it. The constant bickering and babbling is one ass-pect of parenting that sends me right to the “insanity orbit,” where I go round and round.
And what about people who were pregnant with twins or even more babies in the 1950’s? Did they even know they were having more than one? Or was it the howling and screaming from the maternity ward that tipped us off? Can you imagine?
But Ma’am, you are having twins! |
Aprons!! Why were women depicted as messy broads that spent most of their day in the kitchen? What’s so messy about opening a boxed chicken-pot-pie and popping that sucker in the oven?
Given my Mommies In Orbit smart-ass attitude, I most likely would have been drop-kicked right out of the 1950’s coffee klatch, and landed in the 1960’s era, where I would have so rightly met up with the man, Jimi Hendrix! Now that’s more like it!
“Mom your hand looks so masculine, what’s up with that”! |
