Raising kids, one orbit at a time, is not what I want to hear sometimes. You know the days when you just want to pull the blankets over your head and say, “No more, no more parenting!”

“I want out!”

Every stage of a child’s life is so different from the one before. We are currently orbiting in the tween orbit. This is the toughest and the hottest one so far.  I always thought orbits were round, but they are elliptical, therein lies the trouble with raising kids.

“The Sun isn’t quite at the center of a planet’s elliptical orbit. An ellipse has a point a little bit away from the center called the “focus”. The Sun is at the focus of the ellipse. Because the Sun is at the focus, not the center, of the ellipse, the planet moves closer to and further away from the Sun every orbit.” by Windows To The Universe.

I believe that each time we move closer to the sun, the tempers spiral out of control until we experience a solar flare. That’s when Mommies In Orbit feels overwhelmed, sad, and ready to throw in the towel! Nice combination, huh?

This should explain the ups and downs!

The solar flares appear to be happening closer and closer these days. This combined with the Midwestern humidity, too long of a summer break, and the impending heat wave, is about to drive this Mommy to the North Pole!

The heat is on!

So what’s a parent to do? Should I just grin and bear it like my parents did? Should I fill the swimming pool with vodka and jump right in?  Should I read some more parenting books until I burst into flames?

I don’t know what the answer is, but I’m a parent now, thanks to the fertility gods, and I think I’ll just grin and bear it with a martini in one hand and a parachute in the other.
