If you ever get a chance to visit Missouri, try to make a stop at Elephant Rocks State Park, this place is amazing! We took a road trip with the little wranglers in the big minivan. The kids didn’t have any idea what was in store for them. When Mommies in Orbit visited Elephants Rocks back in her teen years, it was awesome, but now I have more of an appreciation for nature.

“Elephant Rocks State Park in the U.S. state of Missouri encompasses an outcropping of Precambrian granite in the Saint Francois Mountains.”

This one looks like a giant baked potato! Pass the butter!

These gigantic granite rocks were formed more than one billion years ago from hot magma. The state parks department has provided a nice winding trail to the top, making the hike a lot easier than before.  When you reach the top of the giant outcropping, take a break and enjoy the view. The breeze was exceptionally strong, and the size of the rocks made for a humbling but incredible experience.

Of course the little wranglers were climbing all over creation while Mom was snapping photos and crossing her fingers that no one would tumble over the edge.

“Awesome.”
WOW!

“Natural History: Huge pink granite boulders, some of them weighing over 600 tons and standing over 20 feet tall, are strewn across a few acres like a giant natural playground. These rocks were formed 1.5 billion years ago by the slow cooling of molten rock, magma, as it bubbled up into the earth’s crust. Later the Ozark plateau warped upward causing stream down cutting and erosion. The granite was slowly exposed and began to slowly weather along joints – vertical and horizontal cracks in the hard rock. Today these rocks continue to slowly weather away.” Compliments of  the Missouri Department of Conservation.

This was an awesome trip for all of us and it was also the first Day of Spring, how lucky can we get?
