There they go again, acting all crazy when I put my shoes on and head for the door. Who? My dogs! They know which pair of shoes indicates, “We’re going for a walk, let’s jump for joy!” What are some of the benefits of daily dog walking?
Our dogs need mental stimulation just like people do to help them feel content. Walking with our dogs allows them to socialize, pick up some new, interesting scents, and feel calm afterwards. It’s a win-win situation, it’s healthy for dog owners too. Brisk walking increases endorphins and helps to control stress. And when we’re less stressed, so are our dogs.
Dogs need to keep on top of their game too, just like pet parents. We need to be exposed to new stimuli, different situations and new people, and so do our dogs. Watching a squirrel race up a tree in the woods, smelling deer tracks, or just rustling around in the leaves, equals one happy dog. Plus it helps to keep the weight down on the pups and the humans! Another plus is that we get to spend quality time with our dogs while walking them and not be distracted by computers or TV’s.
I walk my two dogs, Cody and Nikki everyday. They sort of expect it and if I don’t follow through, there is a price to pay. If I don’t take them, you can just see the restlessness building up. And that’s when they negative behavior can start. Some dogs, pace around, some tear up toys, and some just get that “annoyed” look on their faces.
So basically I have been trained by two very smart dogs, to put on my tennis shoes, grab their collars and leashes, some waste bags for those special occasions, and ready, set, WALK!! That’s all there is to it!

Duke loves walks, though I guess most dogs do! I ask him if he wants to go for a walk and he drops whatever he is chewing on and runs to the door, sits, and waits for me to put his leash on. I love that they have trained you to get ready for walks!
Our dogs are the same. When I put my shoes on and grab my coat, they’re dancing by the door, ready to go.
