My dogs are so very special to me. After all, they are my furry kids. I take safety very seriously with my pets. We are lucky enough to have a fenced yard, with a locked gate. They can get plenty of exercise when they are both in the “chase me” mode. But I do take them on daily walks so they can check out what’s new in the neighborhood.
A Few Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe.
- Always keep your dog on a leash, you never know when another dog may be loose, at least you will have control over your dog.
- When riding in the car, use dog restraints if possible and always use the window lock if you are going to have your windows down, so that your dog doesn’t accidentally stand on the button and roll the window down all the way. (this actually happened to me, but all turned out OK.)
- If you do take you dog for a ride in the car, bring a leash, in case of an emergency.
- Keep your gate locked in your yard, you never know who’s prowling around.
- Bring your dogs in when you leave to go out.
- Make sure all food items, wrappers, gum, medicines, and anything else that may be harmful to your dog is out of paws reach. They are curious little critters when the humans are gone.
- If you have a pool in your backyard, have it gated off from your pets. They may know how to swim, but can they get out of the pool? Don’t take any chances.
- Never leave pets in the car. The inside temperature of a car can escalate quickly.
- During those icy winter months, try to use the “petsafe” sidewalk salt, it’s easier on their delicate paws.
- Microchip your pets, and if you can’t do that, at least make them wear a collar with a tag with up to date information.
- Keep the toilet lid down, you don’t want your dogs exposed to harsh chemicals.
- Watch out for those squeakers in dog toys, you don’t want your dog to swallow them. Throw away old toys that are worn out.

- Just check out the surroundings before you grab your keys and go. You want your dog to be safe and sound in your home.

Great list; whenever I see a dog hanging out of a window, I get nervous, because it’s so dangerous with road stuff flying around; I have rock chips in my windows, if they can do that to my window, what would they do to my dogs? So we have Breeze Guards up to keep them safely in the car, while keeping our windows down for a nice breeze.
And so true about the squeakers; Rodrigo swallows them, so he has to be monitored when playing with a squeaker toy (which he’ll steal from Blue). Now, we don’t bother buying them or I take the squeaker out first.
