Yep, me and the wranglers have returned to the ranch here in Missouri. It’s great to be home! While we were gone the cicada population tripled in the backyard. If you have these supersonic, flying noise makers in your area, you know what I mean. I came across this news story on the web about cicada ice cream, really, do we have to go there?
“Cicadas were the main ingredient in an ice cream that sold out within hours of its June 1 debut at Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream in Columbia, Mo. The base ice cream is brown sugar and butter flavor.”
“The Missouri Department of Conservation, in fact, warns people planning weddings and other outdoor events in May or June to take the periodical cicadas’ emergence into consideration.”
I can’t believe that these hunkin’ bugs can make more noise than Channel Chick and Rocket Boy in the midst of a medievel dual. This type of invasion calls for the big guns. Mommies In Orbit won’t go outside without a holster strapped on with a can of bug spray on one side and a super-blaster water gun on the other. And these suckers are BIG! We’re not talking about wasp or beetle size, I’m talkin’ about 1 1/2 inch flying bugs that don’t care where they land.
Anyway, this too shall pass. I’m thrilled to be away from the solid wall of heat and humidity in Florida, and elated to be back home with The Black Dog and Smart Border Collie.
