Who do you turn to when the chips are down and your human counterparts just don’t get it? Our pets! The comfort and unconditional love so loyally and freely given to us by our pets is soul-soothing. Man’s best friend affords us physical, emotional, social benefits, and the feeling of being needed.
Whether you’re single, married or an empty-nester, pets can offer up a big wet kiss with a cold nose, a happy wagging tail or companionship in a heart warming way. Most dog and cat owners talk to their pets and there have been many times where I wish they could answer.
They give us their undivided attention, which is golden, given how many of us are glued to our phones these days. It is estimated that we will spend about $62 billion dollars on our pets in the year 2016, that’s a lot of dog treats!! According to current market research, by the year 2019, the pet industry is expected to hit about $91 billion in sales.
Here’s a piece from Psychology Today about humans and pets:
“We observed evidence that pet owners fared better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and individual differences, than non-owners on several dimensions,” said lead researcher Allen R. McConnell, PhD, of Miami University in Ohio. “Specifically, pet owners had greater self-esteem, were more physically fit, tended to be less lonely, were more conscientious, were more extraverted, tended to be less fearful and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners.” Bonding with our pets
Facts about Pet Ownership in the U.S.: It’s estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat. (Source: APPA)
