I’ve recently started  gathering  data from my two kids about what the heck goes on in middle school. Whew, what a change from elementary school. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

So just exactly how DO some kids act in this new territory? Well just like in years past, you’ve got the bullies and the non-bullies. Some of the issues are still the same as they were when I was in middle school during the Jurassic period, a mere 208 million years ago.  The villians still call kids who wear glasses, “nerds.” And the kids wearing the glasses still get their feelings hurt, some things never change. Since when are we born with perfect eyesight?  Seems like by now, the smart-aleck bullies could have thought of something a little bit more creative.

Here’s a new one I did not know about. If a kid, any kid, does something that the bullies think is stupid, they yell out, ” That’s a fail,” or here, how about this one, “EPIC Fail.”  What the heck? And to them I say, “OK  jackasses, that’s not even the proper use of English language.”

Here’s one about detention. Some of the kids think “it’s cool” to get detention, so they take it up a notch and “do a high-five.”  Why in the hell would you WANT to get a lunch detention and have to eat in a classroom instead of with your friends?

My daughter doesn’t say quite as much. She tells me that the girls give one another the evil look if they don’t like you and they flip their hair a lot. I imagine eye-rolling is part of the package along with cliques and smart mouths. That doesn’t sound much different than what happens at home. No surprises there!

The bus ride home is always a joy for kids. Here too, you’ve got the bullies and the good kids. The bullies are really full of it by this time of day. I got a report one day that some kid crawled under the bus seat to grab my kid’s backpack and lunchbox just to tease him, what an ass!  The bus driver is most likely immune to this kind of stuff and doesn’t say or do anything. After listening to all the crap that my kids have been through in just one week within our grand educational system, I have pretty much one thing to say to all you bullies out there,”UP YOURS!” Simple and to the point.
