I think both of my kids had quite the TV marathon today while the outside temperatures soared to 106 degrees! These are the days that I’m grateful for cable, air conditioning, and drawing supplies. Today’s activities at the kitchen table during our long heatwave here in the Midwest, reminded me of the days when they used to sit there for hours on end playing with Play-Doh and watching Dora. Although those days are long gone, and they are both heading to middle school this Fall, the kitchen table is still the place to be in our house!
We didn’t go anywhere! Not to the local Q.T. or Mobil to grab an ICEE, not to Target, not even to the garage. We stayed inside and hid from the heat! But just about when the shade started to creep over the pool in the backyard, we all jumped in. One more day of temperatures over 100 degrees and then we go back to more typical weather for Missouri, 90+ degrees and boatloads of humidity, THAT we can handle. Fourth of July celebrations in our city and the surrounding areas were cancelled this year due to dry, drought conditions. The kids were unhappy with the decision, but as parents we were happy that our neighborhood was safe.
We are halfway through the Summer Break, with school starting in our area on August 14th. Hooray! Mommies In Orbit typically celebrates wildly when school starts, but this year my kids will be entering the Middle School Orbit. This is an unfamiliar orbit for all of us. I hope it doesn’t take them too long to adjust. I know they are nervous about it, they don’t bring the subject up often, but I can sense the fear. I’m sure they will slide right into place when they see their friends and their new school becomes familiar to them.
So in the next week we will be shopping up and down Target’s school supplies aisles looking for notebooks, pens, pencils and just that one perfect backpack! Wish me luck!
