It’s March 8th here in the Midwest and we are rapidly approaching Springtime. Winter almost didn’t happen here, along with the rest of the country. Here at home I have noticed that cabin fever is at an all time high. As we orbit through the rest of the Winter, I’ve witnessed tempers exploding as hot as the solar flares on the sun this week.

We are just about at that breaking point where the family “togetherness” has seen its day. Even playing Monopoly together sets the stage for an event similar to the Coronal Mass Ejection or CME as we call it at Mommies In Orbit!

From what I understand, the solar flares occur in three parts:

  • First, radio communications are interrupted by x-rays and ultraviolet light. This is a very common phenomenon at home. We have lots of so-called-interruptions here, I have my own term for this, it’s called, I am the center of the universe, and a pre-teen, goes with the territory.

  • Next comes a huge radiation storm which can threaten the safety of our astronauts. Here on Earth, this type of storm threatens what is left of parental sanity and our boundaries that used to matter.

  • And last but not least, is the CME, or better known as the Coronal Mass Ejection! This occurs when  a cloud of charged particles, and we have two of those at home, works its way to our Earth’s atmosphere, which can then interfere with our magnetic field producing “electromagnetic fluctuations.”  Attitude fluctuations are very common here on Earth, we call this bullshit, in scientific terms.

Solar storms are going to happen and scientists are trying to forecast them more accurately in order to protect our power grids and satellite communications. I only wish they could help me to predict just when cabin fever will be over, and when my kids will
be returning to their regularly awesome beings.
