There are many days when I dream of returning to Germany for a visit. I lived there over 20 years ago, but I still have vivid memories of the ancient buildings and castles. I was a military wife then and we were not eligible for military housing, I’m glad for that now, because I got to experience living in a small town with our German neighbors. Not that they were thrilled to have us rowdy Army folks in their neighborhood. But it all seemed to work out OK.
Charming is a word I would use to describe the small towns. I lived in a town called Erlensee, where people walked and rode bicycles to the local grocery store. I traveled around as much as I could afford to. The Rhine River area was especially unique with the ancient castles dotting the hillsides.

I might have an opportunity to visit Germany again this Fall. If I can go that would be great and if I can’t that’s OK too. I have young kids to raise now and I would rather be able to take them with me when they are old enough to enjoy the magic. I often think how different it would be now, fast-paced and crowded, I’m not sure I want to remember Magical Deutschland that way. I’d prefer to remember it the way it was in 1977-1979. I was young then and not yet a Mommy In Orbit, so traveling was simple.
I could see Ronneburg Castle from my kitchen window, it looked tiny in the distance. That is something I will never forget and it was fun to tell family and friends about it when I returned to the States. At the time Ronneburg Castle was open to the public and free. We would visit often and wander around the castle imaging what it was like many years before us.
If I do get to return to Deutschland, I look forward to a schnitzel dinner with fried potatoes and a big stein of beer! Prost!
