I’ve come to the conclusion that teenagers and dogs have quite a bit in common. After spending the Summer with the “four of them,” I began to notice many similarities, in a good way. They may not speak the same language, well sometimes, but the similarities are definitely visible.

  • Teenagers and dogs love to sleep. Anyplace, anytime and for long periods of time.
  • Dogs and teens are both food hounds. Food is a priority for both, there is a lot of begging going on!
  • Kids and dogs are both moody when they don’t get their own way. For instance, my dogs want to go on a walk several times a day, and proceed to pout when they don’t get their own way. Teens are always wanting to be chauffeured someplace, preferably (for Mom) to spend money, and a solar storm is sure to erupt when Mom says, “NO!”
  • They both express a wide range of emotions. With dogs it’s fairly consistent, with love and acceptance, with a tantrum thrown in occasionally. With teenagers, if you own any of those, you know how they can rip through 10 emotional outbursts within one hour.
  • They are all highly skilled at leaving messes all over the place, including the car. Strategically placed granola bar wrappers, soda cans, dog toys and an abundance of dog hair can always be found.
  • Last, but not least, they both offer unconditional love, on one condition: That they receive belly rubs, treats and lots of walks. For teenagers, their request is simple: always cold, hard cash on hand, junk food, and lots of hugs!
