Have you checked out some of the books your kids may be reading? There’s the Dear Dumb Diary series by Jim Benton and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney. As I was rummaging through the bookcase I found some of both. Some of the stuff is hilarious and coincides with what’s going on with Dear Daughter and Little Dude as they find their way through elementary school and then on to the middle school orbit.

Basically it’s the same stuff that we went through when we were kids a decade ago. Best friends, not so best friends, boys, girls, crushes, strange odors in the classroom, humorous body noises and bumps, divas, nerds and butt-kissin’ kids. These two authors have really injected some humor into the awkward years. Not that it will make those years go by at lightning speed but at least the kids can have a good laugh at themselves. The parents are portrayed about the same way we looked at our parents, over the hill geeks who wouldn’t know how to have fun if it kicked them in the ass.

When my kids came home with permission slips for them to attend lectures on,”The Facts of Life,” there were lots of giggles and teasing. At least they explain it to them in school, waaay different than we learned about the facts of life, while sitting in the far back of the bus with shocked looks on our faces, yikes! Are you kidding me?  They do what?

I’m glad there are people who have created these humorous books to help all of us get through those awkward tween and teen years.  If you ever need a good laugh, grab one off the kids bookshelf, you might be surprised just how humorous growing up can be.
